Background: The initiative to implement a joint project of the EAEU member states for the implementation of accelerated railway and multimodal transportation “Eurasian Agroexpress” aimed at developing regular mutual deliveries of agricultural products and food, as well as export deliveries in Asian and European directions, was supported by the Directive of the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council dated February 25, 2022, No. 3. By the Directive of the EIC dated February 3, 2023, No. 6, the project was scaled to the routes of the “North-South” corridor.

A meeting was held between the Eurasian Economic Commission and the Iranian side on the development of the “Eurasian Agroexpress” project.

“As agreed during the work on the full-fledged free trade zone between the Eurasian Economic Union and the Islamic Republic of Iran, we are translating all our agreements into practical terms,” said Andrey Slepnev, Minister for Trade of the EEC.

In this regard, he reminded that it was about the supply of EAEU products to Iran, as well as the organization of large volumes of transportation of Iranian vegetables and fruits to the market of our countries. The corresponding goods are already present on store shelves today. However, with the involvement of the “Eurasian Agroexpress,” agricultural products will be delivered more promptly, with better quality and fewer intermediaries, the minister expressed confidence.

“We propose cooperation with a major Iranian holding company, which can either directly enter the project or act as a ‘single window’ for organizing deliveries of your agricultural producers to Iran and exporting our products in the opposite direction,” said Ali Reza Peyman-Pak, First Deputy Minister of Agricultural Jihad of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

At the end of the meeting, the parties agreed to continue working in this logic, delegating the discussion of the specific format and details of cooperation to the project management of the “Eurasian Agroexpress” – the Eurasian Agrologistics Autonomous Non-Profit Organization – and the Iranian company.

“At the same time, we understand that besides logistics, there are other issues that need to be addressed. These include mutual settlements, veterinary and phytosanitary control, transit issues through Iran towards the Persian Gulf countries and India,” also noted Andrey Slepnev.
